Chasing Sunsets: 9 of the most iconic sunset locations in Rio

“Rio de Janeiro is a city that enchants you, seduces you, and never lets you go.”
~ Rubem Braga

Rubem Braga was certainly swayed by the sound of samba music and a stunning vibrant sunset when he wrote that quote.

From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, explore these 9 areas for spectacular sunset views:

 1. Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar)

  • The iconic peak offers 360-degree and postcard-perfect sunsets views.
  • Get there by cable car or an adventurous hike.
  • Arrive early as it’s a prime viewing spot for all.
  • Stick around after dusk to enjoy the city lights.

Bonus: on weekends you will find either a DJ playing lounge and bossa nova songs or samba sessions around sunset time

 2. Ipanema Beach

  • The laid-back vibe of Ipanema Beach stretches all the way to the Arpoador rock formations at the end. It’s a popular spot for cheering the sun while its setting.
  • The blend of golden sands, vibrant nightlife and a relaxed beach vibe is the perfect way to enjoy this famous location…along with other travelers and locals

 3. Christ the Redeemer statue

  • One of the most iconic statues in the world also offers a delightful sunset experience.
  • Arrive by cable car or energetic hike, but arrive early to capture all of the splendid colors as the light fades on the horizon.

 4. Santa Teresa Neighborhood

  • The bohemian district with charming streets and a rich artistic culture. Santa Teresa offers a great sunset view from various vantage points.
  • Artistic vibe, local galleries, and cozy cafes.
  • Combine your sunset experience with a visit to local art studios or a meal at a quaint restaurant.

 5. Pedra do Sal — Museum of Tomorrow

  • Catch the stunning sunset at the Museum of Tomorrow, then…
  • head over to Pedra do Sal for a lively samba and street party scene, this historic area is popular for its blend of history, music, and culture.

Tip: Visit on a Monday night for the famous samba event.

 6. Leblon Lookout (Mirante do Leblon)

  • A popular spot at the edge of Leblon Beach, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and the Dois Irmãos Mountains.
  • Quiet, scenic, and less crowded than other spots.
  • Great for a peaceful sunset experience. Ideal for couples and solo travelers.

 7. Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC)

  • Across the bay from Rio, offering a stunning perspective of the city skyline at sunset.
  • Modern architecture, panoramic views of Rio and the Guanabara Bay.
  • Combine with a visit to the museum. Great for art lovers and those looking for a unique angle on Rio.

Tip: Get there using the ferry service crossing the Guanabara Bay for a better experience, avoiding traffic jams and enjoy the beautiful views from the city

8. Parque da Cidade – Niterói

  • This is in the same neighborhood as the Niteroi contemporary art museum (above) and has one of the best views of Rio.
  • It also has a ramp for paragliding and hanggliding flights.

9. Mureta da Urca

A favorite sunset spot for locals, Mureta means “little wall” and it runs along the promenade in the Urca neighborhood.

Along the wall you’ll also find botecos (bars). Take a seat on the wall with some snacks in one hand and a caipirinhas (kai-pur-e-en-ya…a traditional Brazilian cocktail made with Cachaça, freshly squeezed lime juice and sugar)in the other and enjoy the vibrant hues of the sun setting over Guanabara Bay.
